Korean Drama 49 Days

Synopsis:
Shin Ji Hyun was enjoying absolute bliss as she was about to marry her fiancé, Kang Min Ho, but her perfect life is shattered when she gets into a car accident that leaves her in a coma. She is given a second chance at life by a reaper, but it comes with a condition: she has to find three people (except her family) who would cry genuine tears for her. My review:
What caught my eyes to watch this drama was the title itself, 49 days. Because for my belief, it is said that when a person passed away, their soul will come back to make the last visit of their loved ones on the 49th day after they passed away. Thus, I was curious about whether is this 49 days linked to ghost/spirits and indeed, it is somehow linked.

However, don't expect to see anything scary or gross because it is slightly towards the love, family and friends type of relationship plot. Spoiler ahead: Don't expect a happy ending... Sometimes things are meant to be that way. At the end, it felt like a journey ended for the next to begin.

At the end of the show, it's really *thumbsup* for Lee Yo Won's superb acting! Portraying 2 person  character of lively self (when possessed by Nam Gyu Ri) and the emotionless self of her original character in the show, I wonder how she did it. Maybe it is combination of her lively self in Surgeon Bong Dal Hee (SBS, 2007) and the emotional-less self in Bad Love (KBS2, 2007), but to do that in a show, that's impressive!

Foodie Times Boomerang @ Robertson Quay

Brunch time! The very first brunch visit with my friends. A search from the web display this place as one of the brunch location but I am not recommending to this place to those who do not have big appetite.

The presentation of the food looks excellent.




3 Eggs (comes with 4 triangle slices of thick toast)

(The fillings: Shaved Leg Ham, Mushrooms, Tomato) (SGD $14) 
You can choose 3 fillings from the list below (any additional filling is an addition of $1)

The egg omelete was well cooked. 
But personal preference would be towards the type of egg omelete texture, something similar to McDonald's Big Breakfast.

For those who dislike buttered toast, rest assure as the toast they served doesn't do so. They provided the butter for you to decide how much butter you want, or if you decide to have it plain. However, the toast overpowered my big appetite that I was almost toward drinking a mouthful of plain water for every bit after the 2nd slice.

Seriously, I made a bad choice combining mushroom and tomato. It seems to have this weird taste which confused my taste bud, thinking that something tasted fishy. Turns out that mushroom with tomato is a no-no unless you like the combination of their taste.


Additional sides - sauteed potato (SGD $3?/$5?)
A very filling side dish which I regretted ordering since I couldn't even finish the toast. A very compact bite was all I can remember because I was too full from the toast.

Ice Mocha  (SGD $6)
It's been a long time since I drink ice coffee and since almost everyone ordered this, so I went along. See that bottom layer, it's chocolate. A mild sweet beverage.

This is very worth it if you compared what is consists of for brunch. Almost everything that you would want to order are within... From the toast (which is at the right hand side top corner), to the harshbrown, bacon, sausage, omelete etc etc


As it was noon time, my friend opted for the Wagyu Burger (SGD $25)

It's nice and it reminds me of Lasagna.

Potato Wedges (SGD $10) that remains crispy on the outside and yet soft within even after being left untouched for a period of time BUT we are just too FULL...

Foodie Times Ootoya @ Clementi Mall

Went there with my mom and sis and wanted to have Japanese food. After much consideration, we went to Ootoya @ Clementi. And indeed, "This is one Japanese restaurant with no ramen, sushi, sashimi, nabe or yakitori." Source

Despite that, we still go ahead with our plan.
Queuing is expected but if you are looking for someone to be waiting at the counter to guide you to where the queue is, don't! Ask the people where the queue is.

There were two things that surprised me though. 
Call me a "mountain tortoise" but I was amazed by the pen ordering menu BUT I didn't get to use it because I didn't even know about its existence nor did the staffs tell us about it. The pen was at the door entrance slotted nicely and even though the menu had instructions at the bottom of the menu but... Well, maybe it is still in testing phase and not available for use yet, I don't know. So, we had to call for them to take our orders and they memorized our orders! 
Another thing that surprised me is the free flow of rice. A pity I didn't get to refill my bowl since I felt quite full after 1 1/2 bowl of rice.

Okay, We started off with potato salad but it failed to impress my sis who is crazy over potato salad. Maybe it could be the portion, maybe it could be the slightly mild taste of potato...
The overall blend is towards a natural taste of fine ingredients.

 This is charcoal grilled pork fillet set. The pork meat is well done, slightly tough with slightly burnt charcoal taste(?) and without much spices or artificial flavorings (somehow I was reminded of char siew and bbq chicken fillet)  My mom sang praise of the meat sauce but never really tried the sauce. There were only 5 pieces of fillet accompanied with finely-sliced cabbage. (Not enough for meat eater like me!) But this set portion seemed just right for my mom.



My sis went for the grilled chicken with egg set. Reminds me of katsu don and oyako don. Didn't like how the rice was which was soaked with the egg and sauce but it could have been very soggy if not for the japanese rice grain used. Seems to use the same cooking method as the charcoal grilled pork because they taste almost the same except that this is using chicken and not fillet and with eggs. The portion is big so if you are a big eater, you might want to pay this restaurant a visit.

This was what I had. Fried pork fillet (coated with breadcrumb) with simmered eggs. I know it looks like baked rice but it's due to camera-man's lousy skill (which is ME) thus it looks weird. Now, this is really another BIG portion dish. The breadcrumb fillet was very compact (and so was the simmered eggs) and I was instantly reminded of Tonkichi (as in the fillet size). Everything tasted natural, comparable to homecooked food using quality ingredients.

Maybe it's due to culture differences or language barrier, service was not as expected. (as mentioned earlier, maybe the idea of using the pen to order was what we were expected to do)

Total expenses: $64.75 (for the above + 2 cups of hot tea)

Recommended for big eaters (as rice is refillable) or if you like fine ingredients and prefer natural food taste.

Arab Street

At the suggestion of good makan (food) place, we headed to this place at Arab Street (near Bugis). Well, the very first thing before we even met was me praying that it won't rain when we are there. (And days ago, I was praying it will rain because of the hot and stuffy weather where there wasn't any wind at all.) Anyway, it stopped raining by then we yes, we made it to the place.

At my friend's recommendation, I tried this indonesia dish called Sate Padang. Everything looks similar to Singapore delicacy - Satay but the meat that this eatery used is beef (which I was trying to convince my friends it's mutton but I was wrong) and the sauce is toward curry flavor gravy.

For big eaters like me, of course I was complaining that I am still not full! Thus, while walking around to look for photo-taking spots + more FOOD!, I was brought to this eatery full of dishes. In the end we settled for kuehs only. (Per piece costs $0.50). Sugar coated kuehs, so sweet and so nice.. But I prefer the donut shaped (it is not the normal donut, the texture is more chewy) to the balls shaped (the filling taste like sticky rice + grated coconut). The black piece of kueh is made up of rice as well and it has a fragrance which I like a lot. Hope to revisit this place for more kuehs. (A pity we didn't get to try Tahu Telor)

Moving on... there were a lot of shophouses building and also a Malay Heritage Centre but it was closed for renovation for the time being. In the end, our plan for photo-shooting became a wander-less walking around arab street. It's amazing that I have never been to those place before.

No more photos! We kept walking and walking and walking. (But my legs wasn't aching though.)

First we passed by store selling tin robot which does not requires battery to move! It is controlled by some mechanism designed within and operated with a key and has a on and off button but it was going at SGD $20  and the uncle told us it is going at SGD $40+ elsewhere. It's tempting... but I didn't buy it.

And there is this Tuo Luo which I thought I won't find it in Singapore as well, but the uncle was also selling it. And the "5 stones" and "Go Lee" (Marble), the bubble blowing toy shaped in different form such as the Aladdin lamp... And that's not all...

There was yet another mega toy store selling miniature cars, boardgames, etc (occurs 6 shop houses in total). There is this game called "Pickup Stick" which the stores sells a similar one but it uses satay sticks instead of the plastic type one (which I will buy for sure)

Along the way, you can see many stores selling stuffs ranging from clothes to beads to handcraft items. With fading interest in wander-less walking, we were back to square one -> Bugis. 

But it's a weekend! And it's crowded! So... next destination...

Like the chicken, like the sweet soya sauce with chilli but portion is small. But thanks to my friend who was too full from the $8 yogort from Swirl Art, he gave me a portion of his rice and in the end, I was bloated! 

And the wait for the final dish, Ayam Penyet (Fried Smashed Chicken)

The above three dishes are ala-carte and does not comes with the rice. Thus, remember to ask for the rice by topping up $0.50 per plate unless you are there on a weekday where they comes in a set (dish + rice at a lower price value)

This is one of the outlet at Bugis. There is 2 other outlets, one at Jurong East but not sure about the third outlet location. Also, I forgot the name of the stall as well. Let me try to find the name and put it here.

Conclusion of today, it's a sinful day of eating food without spending big bucks!

As you can see, the weather didn't look welcoming. But what do we worry about since we are sheltered in the train station

We were about to left when we suddenly saw this train. For a moment I thought it was there since we got there. But as you can see in the previous picture, it wasn't. So it's just me imagining things. LOL

Story:
This drama tells the story of three siblings who grew up in the 1970′s. Lee Kang Mo, his older brother Sung Mo and younger sister Mi Joo were separated at a young age when their father was killed in a smuggling scheme and their mother also died subsequently. When they are able to reunite years later, they had all reached adulthood and are determined to exact revenge upon the people responsible for their misery.

I started watching this drama because of Lee Bumsoo and conclusion is that I got more than what I asked for. From romance to conspiracy to revenge to tear jerking scenes, you can find them all in this drama.

Got to admit that I am not a Korean drama addict, thus most of the cast I hardly recognize. However, their acting impressed me. Especially their ability in bringing out their characters' different transition at different stages. (Also, credits to the crew in charge of the casts' appearance (style/makeup/outfit).)

However, one would have to think "Woah, so everyone is actually connected to each other" because the plot pretty much makes everyone an important role/pushing factor for the plot to push through so the main characters can proceed to next stage of success.

Good things need time to digest. Take your time in going through the drama's pace.

Osmanthus Jelly/ Gui Hua/桂花糕 ... or at least it looks like it is

Yes, I like the fragrance of osmanthus! Got my first try eating the Gui Hua Tang Yuan and felt in love with the fragrance. It took me a while before I am able to try making my own jelly because I wasn't successful in finding the flower.

Thanks to technology, I found the place to purchase the flowers (in Singapore) from a lady who wrote in her blog. Knowing exactly where it will be available, I decided to look if my neighborhood area has it. Surprisingly, it is available in the Chinese Medical Hall. Thus, it's not that difficult afterall. Just head to your nearest Chinese Medical Hall and ask if they have it.

Note that this is one of the recipe that I came across for making Osmanthus Jelly. There seems to be several ways to making Osmanthus Jelly.

Back to the recipe, I started with
  1. a packet of 10g Konnyaku Jelly Powder (Unsweetened)
  2. 950ml water (following the instruction of the Jelly Powder packet)
  3. 210g sugar (following the instruction of the Jelly Powder packet)
  4. 2 teaspoons* dried osmanthus flowers (following the recipe from the lady blogger, which is 1 tsp flower for every 400ml water).
  5. Optional: Wolfberry 2 tsp (Rinse with water to preserve the taste)
* Note that the tsp don't not need to be a full rounded, just the normal level tsp will do.

Instructions
  1. Add 2 teaspoons dried osmanthus flowers in 950ml water in a pot. Using medium heat, wait for the water (with flowers) to boil.
  2. While waiting, use a big bowl and combine 210g sugar and 10g Konnyaku Jelly Powder and stir till sugar and jelly powder is blended in with each other. Leave aside and check on the water.
  3. Once the water is boiling, switch to a lower heat and drain approximately half of the dried osmanthus flowers from the water. (Do not discard, leave aside).
  4. Add in blended sugar + jelly powder gradually into the water and stir constantly to prevent any lumps.
  5. When the entire portion of blended sugar + jelly powder are mixed into the water, keep stirring till water boils again.
  6. Remove from heat and add in the flowers (that was removed in step 3 earlier on) and stir for a while.
  7. Optional: Place wolfberry at the base of jelly mould
  8. Pour the mixture into desired jelly mould.
Note: If you decide to make one big piece (which I did), after pouring the mixture into the mould, you may notice some bubbles. Using a spoon, press lightly on the bubbles to make them disappear.

Differences between Konnyaku Jelly Powder "Unsweetened" and "Premixed"

I had the opportunity to try out both the Konnyaku Jelly Powder "Unsweetened" and "Premixed".

I prefer Konnyaku Jelly Powder (Unsweetened) which gives a firmer, "Q" version and such that when you bite a piece, it it almost like you are taking a portion away from the jelly but it could be too sweet if the mixture was over-boiled when making.

The Konnyaku Jelly Powder (Premixed) is of a softer bite and it feels like eating a cake (fluffy-feel). Making the Osmanthus Jelly which the pre-mixed version seems to have a more flowery fragrance as compared to the unsweetened version.

It's all about food~And I am not going to backdate my post~

Back dating seems a bit difficult so not going to back date my stuffs anymore. Thus, there are photos which are taken some time ago but only uploaded now.

If you missed the chee cheong fun with sweet sauce, you can still find it at Chinatown.


This is an sweet dessert which has looks like cheong fun wrapped with mango + mango sauce but the white sheet is actually not. Not sure if I remembered correctly it being nata de coco but I was looking forward to a mochi or cheong fun wrap. Anyway, the big chunk of mango is as good as eating the mango itself.

A sweet treat from South Korea. I prefer the Crunky Lotte than the White Chocolate Dice.

Alone at the Chinese Garden

Despite being 2 days late for Mid Autumn Festival, it's so exciting to see such a full moon. Almost missed it if there weren't those few people snapping away at its direction. See!


Sharing the few pictures that I captured that day when I decided on a solo picture taking session. If you see noise, your eyes are not playing a trick on you. Because I got the wrong setting (yet again... I just can't get anything right)

The three different spotlight

It was rather dark with an glowing orange sky when I took this picture. On the left, I made a huge photo-shop editing because there was a tree captured in it... I did wanted to remove it entirely but my skill is limited and it's going to destroy the reflection view. Sometimes I wish I can have my laptop with me so I can see the picture in a larger screen... Then I would be able to focus on the row of trees entirely with the reflection (although I don't know if my lens can cover that in one shot... But we can always rely on stitching... right?)

This place is really wonderful at night. An attempt to capture the whole view. This is the paranoma piece and a pity that I couldn't get that full "boat" in the left.

Hort Park Re-Re-Re-visited!

Yes, I love Parks but NO, I am not a lover of insects and pets. Especially if I encountered it accidentally! But always, I get to encounter them and I think my photography kaki(s) will like to go with me on photography trips because I almost can always get something special. Previously at Botanic Garden (months ago) I spotted a huge size iguana (luckily not kodomo dragon which is not possibly in Singapore (assured by my friend), and when I go MacRitchie Reservoir, I spotted monkeys (A LOT OF THEM!!)

And now back at Hort Park, I spotted a lot of different (?) ? I don't know which categories I should classified them under but I spotted: 1. snail, 2. millipede, 3. iguana 4. black centipede(s)!

Back to my trip to Hort Park
Objective: Close Up shots
Outcome: FAILURE! (First, I didn't bring my very very heavy tripod! I want to change to the one that my friend have!! it's SO LIGHT with the head included!!!) In the end, I sticked to what my friend proposed, 18-55mm with Hoya +4 filter.

Relaxing my eyes, I looked up. Nothing special, nothing unique, and they are just trees, leaves and branches with no high rise building behind and it's enough to make me appreciate that.

Is this lalang? That's was the question I had in mind. I have seen the stalk of lalang but this (as shown in picture), it must have been a long time ago (when I was in my primary or secondary where we have a field) where I saw it.
